Ian Shaw Governor

My name is Ian Shaw, I am 46 Years old, and was born & bred in York, North Yorkshire. I have three Children, one in late teens, the other two in their twenties. My wife works as a Team Manager, managing assessors within a Training Organisation in Stockton. I was previously a Parent Governor for St Johns Primary School in Shildon, and thoroughly enjoyed the role, however in 2007 my family and I moved up to Peterhead, in Aberdeenshire, for a few years, but have since relocated back to the North East, where we belong.

My employment history is predominately in Retail Management, having worked at the former Woolworths, British Home Stores, where I side stepped into Loss Prevention Management, having gained skills in Retail Management & Loss Prevention & Security Management. Prior to moving back to the North East I worked as a Health, Safety & Environmental Inspector for a large Scottish Manufacturing Industry where Safety was paramount due to testing off shore valves using pressure testing techniques, carried out Risk Assessments, COSHH Assessments & Fire Assessments including carrying out Noise Measurement Testing.

In 2011 I set up working for myself in Property Maintenance firstly in Teesside where there was quite a demand, and later in Newton Aycliffe, in 2018 I moved away from self-employment and formed our own Limited Company that employed 3 people this year and is steadily growing.

Therefore my skill set is Health & Safety – I have my NEBOSH Health & Safety Certificate & C&G 2377 Electrical Inspection & Testing Certificate, as well as my NEBS Management Certificate. I have Management skills & experience, albeit in retail, Security & Loss Prevention Experience, and responsibilities as a Director of a Limited Company, along with previous experience of been a Parent Governor for St Johns in Shildon.

I am a candid individual who enjoys a challenge, happy to work in a team, or on my own, I am very analytical as my previous role within Loss Prevention required this, having to study reports, trends & analyse data to pick up any anomalies or acts of dishonesty. Another trait I have; some may say it’s good, some may disagree to a point, is that I tend to work in Black & White, for example something is either good or bad, or has passed or failed, or is either Complying with the Rules/Regulations or is indeed not – this is probably due to my work in Loss Prevention & carrying out Audits either in Health & Safety, or visiting other stores to carry out compliance checks.
